Hwang Jin Yi (or Hwang Jini) is one of the most famous gisaeng in Korean history, and she was known to be one of the most beautiful women in Korea. She was noted for her exceptional beauty, charming quick wit, extraordinary intellect, and her assertive and independent nature. She has become an almost legendary figure in modern Korea, inspiring novels, operas, films, and television series.
During this era, noble women and gisaeng wore extravagant wigs to show off their beauty. This hairstyle is called Eonjun meori (얹은머리). The gisaeng or courtesans also wore this wig daily, adorned with hairpins and other accessories. This style of lavish Korean hairstyle is similar to the styles of Marie Antoinette’s era: big, elaborate, and lavish.
Here are the makeup products I used for this look:
Eyebrows: Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow in Medium BrownEye Shadow: LORAC Pro Palette
Eye Liner: MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack
Lashes: Nubounsom Egyptian Mau Mink Lashes ( discount code “sarahsori” for 20% off your purchase!)
Face: Makeup Forever HD Foundation 125, MAC pressed powders, YSL Touche Eclait to highlight, Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit to contour
In my video tutorial, you will see that you can replicate this hairstyle without a wig. You just need some hair donut (bun makers), bobby pins, and hairspray. The trick to making this look was rolling the hair around the bun, securing the hair and bun with pins, and lots and lots of hairspray.
